On Sunday, we celebrated the counterpart to our Daughter's Day we had last August for the girls. Shayne was all kinds of excited about his own day and, in the days leading up to Sunday, constantly reminded us of what we did for the girls so we would not neglect any of the same attentions for him.
He enjoyed a breakfast in bed of his favorite bacon, egg, and cheese biscuits--very early, thanks to Daylight Savings and 9:00 church--then opened his card and two gifts. (Sharon, you can see from this picture that the plates you guys made the kids way back when are still deemed the "favorite" plates and used often!)
We had decided previously that this year we were going to implement a new tradition for Mother's/Father's/Daughter's/Son's Days, and that was that all gifts for these holidays should be of the homemade variety. So, in order to combat the clutter of paper resulting from Shayne's love of drawing and coloring, I made him a personalized notebook filled with page protectors for his artwork (just made up a cover page and spine label for one of those see-through window 3-ring binders), and Brendon routed, painted, and attached bulldog clips to a long strip of wood to hang in his room for an artwork display.
I was initially worried that he would see our gifts as just methods of having him clean up the art/easel area in his room, but it doesn't look like he took it that way AT ALL...because all he has been doing for the past three days is work on creating all new pieces for his notebook and display, rather than just filling it in with the stacks of pictures he already has! Aye yi yi.
Oh, how we love this boy of ours. He is such a big helper and is learning and growing by leaps and bounds. (Yeah, you know your kids are getting older when you can't speak in code to your spouse by spelling out words over the tops of their heads anymore..."Ice cream?!! Did you just spell ice cream?! Yipee!!")
And we (and he) can't wait to be able to include another son in our celebration next year as well.

I just love the total joy in their faces (shayne and grace) in the breakfast in bed pictures. What a special thing for them.
How fun! I love that you decided to do homemade gifts. You guys did some great ones, too.
What a great mommy you are!!! I like the art display clip thing too!
Where are the preggo pics...another boy, awesome:)
I totally love Shaynes toothless grin! So cute!! I think we are going to start doing this as well. Great ideas!
Uh oh. Ethan just saw the title of this post and asked me when Son's Day is and why we didn't celebrate it.
Seeing that plate just made my day!
