Aubrey has had her glasses for almost four months now, and she is really great with them, only taking them off for naps and bedtime. (They've actually become a great little signal for her when it's time to go to sleep.) And while they did straighten out her left eye both immediately and dramatically, it still pulls in just a little. Brendon and I didn't notice it at first because, again, the change in how it had been was so dramatic, but by the time her first follow-up appointment came around in March, we were already anticipating what the doctor told us: we needed to try patching the "good" eye to strengthen the weaker one. So she has been wearing her little patches for two hours every day for the past six weeks.
I've been really impressed with this brand of patches, Ortopad. They come in cute little patterns--my favorite is the pink camo--and are super gentle on her skin. She doesn't like having the patch actually put on (who would?), but once it is on and her glasses are back on over the top, she has been fine with the patch, as well.
This week she had her latest follow-up appointment. Again, while the patching has improved and strengthened the eye, it's not quite perfect in alignment. So, doc says, we're probably looking at surgery. (Not to correct her vision, only the alignment; she'll always wear glasses.) But, the pediatric opthamologist we have been seeing is retiring at the end of this month. Of course. So, rather than try to squeeze it in before he leaves, only to turn her over to a new doctor right afterwards, we are going to stay the course for another two months. We'll continue patching and see the new doctor in July after he gets settled in. He'll probably want to start fresh with her, check her prescription, etc. and then we'll revisit the possibility of surgery.
So, until then, it will continue to be a pirate's life for Aubs. Arrrggh, matey!

She is so cute! That really stinks about the doctor retiring. Hope all goes well with the new one.
Her nickname should be "Cy?"
Super tooty!
She is the cutest little pirate I've ever seen!
